Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Major Daniel ANGEL (1911-1999)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Daniel Angel, film producer, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews on the stage of the BBC Television Theatre, having been brought there by Derek Bond and Alan Sleath from the BBC television series Picture Parade and led to believe that the subject was to be the actor Kenneth More.
Daniel, who was born and educated in London, entered the family firm of theatrical costumiers after leaving school. While serving as a Major with the Royal Artillery in India and Burma during the Second World War, he contracted polio and was told he would never walk again.
Invalided home, he spent time at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where he was rehabilitated and learnt to walk with crutches. He began producing short documentary films in 1946 and made his first feature, Murder at the Windmill, in 1949. He went on to produce several notable British films of the early 1950s, including The Sea Shall Not Have Them and the BAFTA award-winning Reach for the Sky.
