Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Margaret HAYLES
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Margaret Hayles, charity founder, was surprised by Michael Aspel in the foyer of Thames Television's Teddington Studios, having been led to believe she was there to be interviewed about a recently published book about her.
Margaret, a foundling baby left at Stockwell Underground station during the Blitz, was adopted by a Sussex-based banker and educated at Trevelyan Private School in Hayward's Heath. Having trained as a nurse, she left the profession to raise her family after getting married.
Looking for a new interest after her marriage failed, Margaret felt inspired by her neighbour's daughter, who had cancer and whose greatest wish was to meet jockey Bob Champion. Having successfully arranged the meeting, Margaret established Dreams Come True, a charitable organisation that has fulfilled the wildest dreams of over a thousand seriously ill children.
