Alan MINTER (1951-2020)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Alan Minter, boxer, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews during a charity fundraising event for the St George's Club in the Great Rooms of the Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane in London.
Alan, who was born in Penge, Bromley and first began boxing at school, joined the Crawley Amateur Boxing Club at the age of 12. As an amateur boxer he had 145 fights, and won a bronze medal at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich in the light-middleweight classification before turning professional later that year.
Nicknamed Boom Boom Minty, Alan won the British Middleweight title in 1975 and the European Middleweight title in 1977. In March 1980 he became the World Middleweight Champion defeating Italian-American Vito Antuofermo at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas - the first British boxer to win a world title in the US in 63 years.
