Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
JOY: It's the night of the TV Times Top 10 Awards and Petula Clark receives her trophy from Editor Peter Jackson. TV Times readers voted Petula Most Popular Female Singer on TV. Left, compare Jimmy Tarbuck.
SURPRISE: At the end of the show, the Top 10 stars line up for a final bow with Jimmy Tarbuck: Kenneth More, Noele Gordon, Gordon Jackson, Diana Coupland, Petula Clark, Val Doonican, John Alderton, his wife Pauline Collins, and Peter Jackson. Suddenly, another figure joins the show; Eamonn Andrews – which can only mean one thing at a moment like this. He is about to say This Is Your Life...
HORROR: Eamonn Andrews moves in on a disbelieving Petula Clark to announce This Is Your Life. TV Times combined with separate studios, ATV and Thames, to surprise her during a flying visit from Switzerland.
CONFESSION: As the story unfolds of her rise to international stardom Pet is joined by husband, Frenchman Claude Wolff, who admits the big "white lie": "It's the first time I've kept anything from her."
AMUSEMENT: Among the parade of stars in Petula's life story – Peter Ustinov, Charles Aznavour, Mai Zetterling, Jimmy Young, Jack Warner, Kathleen Harrison, Tony Hatch, Jackie Trent – come more surprises... the two daughters Petula thought she had left behind in Switzerland are at the studio. Barbara, aged 12 and Kate, nine, had flown into London secretly to spring the surprise on their mother.
COMFORT: a FINAL TWIST IS THE APPEARANCE OF Pet's two-year-old son Patrick. The lights, the sounds, the faces... it's all a bit too much, so Patrick retreats, to be retrieved by Noele Gordon before being comforted.
