Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Leonard STANMORE (1902-1961)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Leonard Stanmore, chauffeur, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews at the BBC Television Theatre, having been brought there by his friend Allan Callow to watch an edition of This Is Your Life while visiting London on business.
Leonard was born in Plympton, Devon, but married and settled in the Cornish town of Launceston, where he worked as a baker's roundsman and later as a taxi driver. He was known for his generosity, buying Christmas presents for his client's children and driving nurses to work on Sundays and Christmas Day when there was no local public transport.
During the Second World War, he and his wife opened their home to evacuees and homeless children. When he later became a chauffeur, he regularly 'borrowed' his boss's car to help those in need. As chairman of his local Toc H association, he was known locally as 'Saint Leonard' because of his 'warm sympathy and great kindness'.
