Captain O P JONES CVO, OBE (1898-1980)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - O P Jones, retired pilot, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews in the foyer of the BBC's Lime Grove Studios, having been led to believe he was there for a meeting.
Oscar Philip Jones, known simply as 'O P', began his flying career with the Royal Flying Corps towards the end of the First World War. After the war, he became a pilot in a firm offering 'joy rides' to passengers before acting as a pilot for Instone Airlines, one of several companies which joined forces in 1924 to form Imperial Airways.
He flew many routes, and the flying public, who adored his charisma, often asked for him by name when booking flights. He was also well-known for his skill and calm in tricky situations and was responsible for raising the status of the airline pilot to a dignified and professional standard with his dress and attitude.
