Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Miriam JOWETT MBE
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Miriam Jowett, British Red Cross officer, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews at the BBC Television Theatre, having been led to believe she was there to record an appeal to commemorate the centenary of the Red Cross movement.
Miriam volunteered with the Red Cross while working as a clerk in a London bank before becoming a full-time welfare officer with the organisation in 1944. She was sent to Arromanches and Bayeux in France to help with the casualties in the aftermath of D-Day.
In 1945 she was in Berlin, where she helped rehabilitate British nationals suffering from disease and starvation at the end of the Second World War. By 1950 Miriam was director of the Glamorgan branch of the British Red Cross based in Cardiff, where she established a Sunshine Club to help the old, poor, sick and lonely residents.
