Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Evelyn BARK OBE (1900-1993)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Evelyn Bark, Director of International Affairs for the Red Cross, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews at the BBC Television Theatre.
Evelyn joined the British Red Cross at the outbreak of the Second World War, initially undertaking voluntary duties in a London maternity hospital. She later joined the Foreign Relations department which assisted civilians across Europe to communicate with relatives anywhere in the world via the International Red Cross Tracing Agency in Geneva.
At the end of the war Evelyn established a tracing service for missing persons, and as one of the first to enter Belsen concentration camp with the Red Cross team, helped make it possible for camp survivors to be reunited with families and friends. She went on to hold several posts within the organisation, including Commissioner in Germany, Foreign Relations Adviser, and Director of International Affairs. Her organisational ability and gift for friendship and sympathetic understanding of different cultures, earned her a world-wide reputation.
