Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Florence PRIEST MBE
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Florence Priest, medical missionary, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews in the audience at Thames Television's Euston Road Studios.
In 1931, at the age of 17, Florence began training as a nurse at the Frenchay Hospital in Bristol. She initially worked as a midwife, but by the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, she was training as a district nurse. After the war she decided to go into missionary work, and in October 1947 she left England for Ratnapur in Bangladesh.
She is described as a legend by those who knew of her 28 years work in Bangladesh - where she faced every kind of hardship – bandits, battles, disease and danger, to make a lasting contribution to thousands of lives. Florence had recently retired as a missionary and returned to England to work with the Reverend Alex Soloman in parish of St George in the East in London's Stepney.
