Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Jim WICKS (1894-?)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Jim Wicks, boxing manager, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews during a gathering to celebrate his 82nd birthday in the banqueting hall of a London hotel, from where the programme was then recorded.
Jim, who was born in Bermondsey and was a keen boxer in his youth, left school at the age of 14 and found work in the local docks. After serving with the London Scottish Regiment during the First World War, he worked for a local bookmakers. By 1930 Jim was promoting dog racing at Wandsworth Stadium, but his keen eye for boxing talent led him into boxing management.
He became an original member of the Boxing Board of Control, and went on to manage Henry Cooper and his twin brother George. Under Jim's management, Henry was undefeated in British and Commonwealth heavyweight championship contests for twelve years, and held the European heavyweight title for three years.
