Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Janet ADAMS MBE (1920-2006)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Janet Adams, British Red Cross nurse, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews at Thames Television's Euston Road Studios, having been led to believe she was there to be interviewed about her experiences with the Red Cross.
Janet, who was born in London, first volunteered as a nurse during the Second World War. After training, she worked at the Bridge of Earn Hospital in Perth, Scotland. She joined the overseas branch of the British Red Cross Society as a qualified nurse with specialised training in tropical diseases in 1949.
Janet dedicated her life to helping victims of war, disease and disaster worldwide, serving in Singapore, Ghana, Malaya, Nigeria, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Jordan, Zanzibar, the Yemen and Sierra Leone. In 1963, the Red Cross International Committee awarded her its highest honour, the Florence Nightingale Award, for pioneering nursing and welfare services in many parts of the world.
