Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Phyllis MAYCOCK MBE (1922-2005)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Phyllis Maycock, retired bus conductress, was surprised by Michael Aspel in the Oxfordshire village of Charlton-on-Otmoor.
After leaving school at the age of 14, Phyllis went into service as a housemaid at Rectory Farm in the Gloucestershire village of Oddington. During the early years of the Second World War, Phyllis found work on an assembly line, but by 1942 she was working as a conductress with the Honours Bus Company, which later became known as the Charlton-on-Otmoor service.
A two week temporary stint became a full time job, and Phyllis remained with the bus company for over 50 years, retiring on Christmas Eve in 1993. She was well known for her caring personal touch with her passengers, and was awarded the MBE in the 1994 Queen's New Years Honours List for her services to transportation.
