Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Francis LEE (1944-2023)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Francis Lee, former footballer, was surprised by Michael Aspel at Granada Studios in Manchester, having been led to believe he was there to take part in an interview.
Francis, who started his professional football career with Bolton Wanderers in 1959, was signed to Manchester City in 1967 by the then manager Joe Mercer. In his first season at the club he scored 16 League goals in 31 appearances, playing a crucial role in the club's push for the 1967–68 League Championship. The following season he was part of the team which won the 1969 FA Cup.
In the 1969–70 season, Francis was Manchester City's top scorer, an achievement he would subsequently match in each of the next four seasons. His tally that season included one of the most important goals of his career, a penalty in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup. He joined Derby County in 1974 and after retiring from playing two years later he moved into business. Francis became chairman of Manchester City in 1994.
