Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Stuart HIBBERD (1893-1983)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE – Stuart Hibberd, radio broadcaster, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews in the audience at the King's Theatre, Hammersmith.
Stuart, who was born in Canford Magna in Dorset and educated at St John's College, Cambridge, served with the Dorset Regiment during the First World War, firstly at Gallipoli and then later in India. He joined the BBC in 1925 as an assistant announcer on the 2LO station based at the Savoy Hill studios in London. In addition to announcing various programmes, he also read the news bulletins.
He became the BBC's Chief Announcer, and as the 'Voice of the BBC', he led listeners to BBC Radio through such milestones as the General Strike of 1926 and the death of King George V in 1935. From 1949 he hosted The Silver Lining, an afternoon programme aimed at disabled and housebound people, which he continued to present after retiring as Chief Announcer in 1951.
