Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Tony BLACKBURN (1943-)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Tony Blackburn, disc jockey and television presenter, was surprised by Michael Aspel while broadcasting his Capital Gold radio show at the company's studios in London.
After beginning his career as a singer, releasing several singles in the late 1960s, Tony then worked as a DJ for the offshore radio stations Radio Caroline and Radio London, before joining the BBC in 1967, where he became the first DJ to be heard on BBC Radio 1 when it officially launched in September of that year.
Tony co-presented BBC television's Top of the Pops throughout the 1970s as well as the variety programme Seaside Special, while continuing to broadcast on BBC radio until he left the BBC in 1987 and joined Capital in 1988.
