Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Teddy JOHNSON (1920-2018) and Pearl CARR (1923-2020)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Teddy Johnson and Pearl Carr, husband and wife entertainers, were surprised by Eamonn Andrews as they arrived at Thames Television's Teddington Studios, having been led to believe they were there to record an edition of the Looks Familiar television programme in celebration of their 30 years of making music together.
Teddy, who was born in Tolworth, worked as a drummer on the P&O liner SS Corfu and later sang with various bands before spending two years as an announcer and DJ with Radio Luxembourg. Pearl, who was born in Exmouth, studied at the Corona Stage School and performed for C B Cochran before becoming lead singer of the vocal quartet, The Keynotes.
Having first sung together on the BBC radio programme Black Magic, they married in 1955, became known as 'Mr and Mrs Music', had a successful recording career throughout the 1950s and 1960s and appeared frequently on television light entertainment programmes. In 1959, they represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest, finishing second with Sing, Little Birdie.
