Alfie, who was born in Bethnal Green, London, began his acting career at London's Unity Theatre in the late 1930s. During the 1950s, he played supporting roles in films, including The Lavender Hill Mob and It Always Rains on Sunday. He appeared regularly on television, most notably from 1957 in the ITV sitcom The Army Game in the role of Pte.
