Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Jackie STEWART (1939-)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Jackie Stewart, motor racing driver, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews at Thames Television's Euston Road Studios, having been led to believe he was there to take part in another programme.
Jackie, who was born in Milton, Dunbartonshire, began his working life as a petrol pump attendant at the garage owned by his father, a successful car dealer who had been an amateur motorcycle racer. As a teenager, Jackie competed as a member of the Scottish clay pigeon shooting team and won the British championship at the age of 19.
Encouraged by a customer of the family business, Jackie began racing cars in the early 1960s. Competing in Formula One from 1965, he won his first World Championship race at Monza in that year's Italian Grand Prix and went on to win the 1969 World Championship, driving a Matra-Ford for Ken Tyrell.
"I don't believe it! You know, it had to be something like this - considering what's happened today!"
