Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Captain Anthony KIMMINS OBE (1901-1964)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Anthony Kimmins, playwright and film director, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews outside the BBC Television Theatre, distracted by a 'mock' film set while on his way to an appointment elsewhere.
Anthony, who was born in Harrow, was educated at the Royal Naval College, Osborne, and served as a naval officer during the First World War. While in the Navy, he wrote a play, While Parents Sleep, which was a smash hit. After retiring from the Navy, he entered films, writing and directing several films, including starring vehicles for George Formby.
He rejoined the Navy during the Second World War, serving in the Fleet Air Arm in Intelligence and the Admiralty before retiring as a captain in 1945. On his return to films, he produced and directed an eclectic mix of films, such as the psychological thriller Mine Own Executioner. He also re-established his position in theatre with a successful run of his farcical comedy The Amorous Prawn.
