Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Helen SHAPIRO (1946-)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Helen Shapiro, singer and actress, was surprised by Michael Aspel outside Thames Television's Teddington Studios, having been led to believe she was there to take part in a programme devoted to Humphrey Lyttelton.
Helen, who had her first hit record in 1961 when she was only 14 years old, would have four hit singles in the top three of the UK singles chart before she was sixteen - including two number one hits with You Don't Know and Walking Back To Happiness - making her the youngest female chart topper in the UK.
After her pop career ended she went on to appear in musical theatre, playing Nancy in Lionel Bart's Oliver! and Sally Bowles in Cabaret. She toured extensively from 1984 with the British jazz trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton and his band, whilst still performing her own jazz and pop concerts.
