Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Marti CAINE (1945-1995)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Marti Caine, comedienne and entertainer, was surprised by Michael Aspel at Woburn Golf Club, while receiving a golf lesson from comedian Tom O'Connor for a new BBC television series.
After achieving national fame by winning the ITV talent show New Faces in 1975, Marti went on to star in her own BBC television show throughout the 1970s. She returned to New Faces in the 1980s, this time as its compère, reviving the show into a ratings winner.
Marti played to sell-out audiences in cabaret, pantomime and summer seasons, and led a successful UK tour of the musical Funny Girl. She starred in the BBC television sitcom Hilary in 1984, which was written specifically for her, and in 1986 she performed a one-woman show at London's Donmar Warehouse, co-writing fourteen songs about her life experiences.
Marti Caine was a subject of This Is Your Life on two occasions – previously surprised by Eamonn Andrews in March 1978 in Sheffield City Centre.
