Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
George LAYTON (1943-)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - George Layton, actor and writer, was surprised by Michael Aspel during a photo shoot at Holborn Studios in London with the cast members of the BBC television series Sunburn.
George, who was born in Bradford, first began acting at the town's Civic Playhouse before studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he won the Emile Littler Award. Having appeared in the play Chips with Everything in 1963 at the Royal Court Theatre and on Broadway, he became a familiar face on television in programmes such as Z-Cars and The Likely Lads.
In 1969, he appeared in the ITV sitcom Doctor in the House and went on to star in its sequel, in addition to co-writing several episodes. George also appeared in the BBC sitcom It Ain't Half Hot Mum and the ITV drama series Minder and later created and wrote the sitcoms Don't Wait Up and Executive Stress. He also wrote two collections of children's stories, which became part of the GCSE curriculum.
