Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Mickie MOST (1938-2003)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Mickie Most, record producer, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews at BBC Broadcasting House in London, having been led to believe he was there for a brief chat with the controller of BBC Radio 1, Derek Chinnery, about a forthcoming show.
Mickie, who was born in Aldershot but grew up in north London, had an early interest in music and initially worked as a singing waiter at London's The 2i's Coffee Bar, where he formed a singing duo with Alex Wharton, billed as the Most Brothers. In 1959, he travelled to South Africa with his wife and, having formed a pop group, had eleven consecutive number-one hits, mostly with cover versions.
Returning to London in 1963, he established himself as a record producer, discovered the groups Herman's Hermits and The Animals, and had hit records with Donovan, Brenda Lee and Lulu. In 1969, he founded RAK Records and sold over 500 million records worldwide in a 25-year career. In addition, he became a familiar face on television during the 1970s as a panellist on ITV's talent show New Faces.
