Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Ted ROGERS (1935-2001)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Ted Rogers, comedian and television presenter, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews - with the help of Frankie Howerd - while on his way to a business meeting in Covent Garden, London.
Ted, who was born in Kennington, south London, had his first taste of show business by winning a holiday camp contest at age 15 impersonating comedy stars of the day. After leaving school, he worked for W H Smith, selling magazines at Westminster tube station before doing his national service in the Royal Air Force.
He began his professional career working as a Butlin's Redcoat until his big break in 1959 when he played Buttons in the West End production of Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. In the 1960s, he was the resident comedian on television's Billy Cotton's Band Show, and he later hosted the legendary ITV show Sunday Night at the London Palladium. He presented the ITV game show 3-2-1 from 1978, becoming a household name with his finger-snapping catchphrase!
"Get out of it! Get away! Oh come on Eamonn - be fair!"
