Big Red Book
Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Terry O'NEILL (1938-2019)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Terry O'Neill, photographer, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews in room 206 of the Ritz Hotel in central London, having been led to believe he was there for a television interview about his new book, Legends.
Terry, who was born in Romford and grew up in Middlesex, was a keen drummer in his youth and spent some time playing drums in the Pete Waters jazz band. While working as a messenger boy at Heathrow Airport, he successfully applied for a job as a trainee photographer with the airline BOAC.
After working in Fleet Street with The Daily Sketch during the late 1950s, Terry became known for documenting the fashions, styles and celebrities of the 1960s - including statesmen, politicians, film stars, pop stars and members of the British royal family.
