Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Deryck GUYLER (1914-1999)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Deryck Guyler, actor, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews.
Deryck, who was born in Wallasey, Cheshire, studied theology, having originally planned a career in the clergy before joining and performing with the Liverpool Repertory Theatre. During the Second World War, he served with the RAF Police, but having been invalided from service, he joined ENSA and then, in 1942, the BBC's Drama and Repertory company.
In 1946, he became a regular on the immensely popular BBC radio series It's That Man Again before working on many other BBC radio programmes, including Children's Hour and Journey into Space. On television, he gained greater recognition in his association with comedian and writer Eric Sykes and, between 1968 and 1972, was a regular in the ITV sitcom Please Sir!

This Is Your Life often annoys me with the cavortings of big-headed, so-called 'stars'. But the programme about Deryck Guyler was a real oasis. What a treat to see such a warm-hearted family, keeping their sense of proportion in spite of success.

WHAT A lovely subject was Deryck Guyler! I love the programme for the 'real' side it shows of people, and Derrick was the tops.
He was sincere and obviously moved - as good being himself as all the characters he has played.
Also his life was long enough to be varied and of special interest.
