Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Mick CHANNON (1948-)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Mick Channon, racehorse trainer and former footballer, was surprised by Michael Aspel while being interviewed at his West Ilsley racing stables near Newbury.
Mick, who was born in Wiltshire, began his football career as an apprentice with Southampton FC in 1964, and in two spells totalling almost 15 years, he made over 500 appearances with the club. He also played for Newcastle United, Bristol Rovers, Norwich City and Manchester City and would represent the English national team during the 1970s, with 46 caps in total.
An avid interest in horse racing during his football career led to him becoming an assistant trainer after retiring from playing in 1986. Later, as a licenced trainer, he invested in stables previously owned by the Queen. By 2001 he had become one of Britain's most successful trainers amassing 619 wins and prize money of more than £5 million.
