THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Gary Rhodes, restaurateur and television chef, was surprised by Michael Aspel during a photo shoot for his new television series at the BBC Television Centre in London.

Gary, who was born in Dulwich, London, became interested in cooking at an early age. Encouraged by his stepfather, he attended catering college in Thanet before becoming a commis chef at the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel. Having recovered from head injuries suffered in a road accident, he toured Europe in various jobs before becoming sous chef at the Reform Club in London.

He worked at London's Capital Hotel before joining the Castle Hotel in Taunton as head chef. In 1990, he returned to London as head chef at the Greenhouse restaurant in Mayfair, where he was awarded a Michelin Star in January 1996. Having made guest appearances on several television programmes, Gary was given his own BBC series, Rhodes Around Britain, in 1994.
