Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
John BARNES MBE (1963-)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - John Barnes, football manager and former footballer, was surprised by Michael Aspel during a speech about his youth work in Africa at the London headquarters of the charity, Save the Children.
John was born in Jamaica and moved to London with his family in 1976. He began his English football career with Stowe Boys Club in Paddington while still at school before being signed by Watford FC in 1981 aged 17. He spent six years with the club before moving to Liverpool FC in 1987, where, over ten years, he helped the club win the then top-flight First Division twice and the FA Cup twice.
He made his debut for England in 1983, and by the time of his last appearance in 1995, he had been capped 79 times - then a record for a black player. After two years with Newcastle United FC, he ended his playing career at Charlton Athletic FC in 1999. In the same year, he moved to Scotland to become head coach of Celtic FC with his former Liverpool FC manager Kenny Dalglish as director of football.
