Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Richard DUNN (1945-)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Richard Dunn, heavyweight boxer, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews on a building site in central London, having been led to believe he was there for publicity photographs ahead of his attempt at the World Heavyweight title.
Richard, who was raised in Leeds and Halifax, played rugby in his youth before taking up boxing. Following a spell in the British Army with the 4th Battalion Parachute Regiment, Richard turned professional in 1969 whilst continuing to work as a scaffolder on building sites. Despite losing three major titles in succession in 1974, he went on to win both the British and Commonwealth titles in September 1975.
In April 1976, Richard won the European Heavyweight title against Bernd August at the Royal Albert Hall in London. At the time of his This Is Your Life tribute, he was due to fight for the WBC and WBA titles against the American champion Muhammad Ali in Munich, Germany.
