Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Gary MABBUTT MBE (1961-)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Gary Mabbutt, former footballer, was surprised by Michael Aspel during an interview with Garth Crooks at White Hart Lane, the home of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club in North London.
Gary, who was born into a footballing family in Bristol, followed his father Ray, a professional footballer, to Bristol Rovers, making his league debut in December 1978 while still an apprentice. Although he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 17, he was able to continue his career. He joined Tottenham Hotspur in 1982, where he won the UEFA Cup in 1984 and captained them to victory in the 1991 FA Cup Final.
Having captained the England U21 team, he won 16 caps overall for the national team, becoming the first diabetic to play for England. Despite his diabetes and various injuries, which led to the nickname The Bionic Man, Gary continued playing for Spurs until the 1997-98 season, retiring after 16 years with the club.
"Amazing! Thank you very much. I didn't expect this, I must say!"
