Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Hughie GREEN (1920-1997)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Hughie Green, television presenter and actor, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews as he was about to fly his plane at Elstree Aerodrome.
Hughie, who was born in London, had his own BBC Radio show by the age of 14 and toured with his own all-children cast concert party called Hughie Green and his Gang. In the 1930s, he appeared in the films Midshipman Easy and Tom Brown's School Days. He served with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a pilot during the Second World War.
Hughie became a household name in 1955 with the ITV quiz show Double Your Money before presenting his most successful format, his self-developed talent show Opportunity Knocks. The show began on radio and transferred to television, first in 1956 and then again in 1964, and launched the show business careers of, among others, comedians Les Dawson and Frank Carson and poet Pam Ayres.
