Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Patrick CARGILL (1918-1996)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Patrick Cargill, actor, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews in the foyer of Thames Television's Euston Road Studios, having been led to believe he was there for a business meeting.
Patrick, who was born in London, grew up in Eastbourne, where he acted with the local amateur dramatics group founded by his parents. Forced into a military career by his father, he trained at the Royal Military College Sandhurst and later served in the British Indian Army.
Returning to Britain after the Second World War and buying himself out of the Army, he found work with various repertory theatres before landing his first leading West End role in 1960. He appeared regularly in films and on television before starring in the ITV sitcom Father, Dear Father in a role written specifically for him, which made him a household name.
