Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Anthony QUAYLE CBE (1913-1989)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE – Anthony Quayle, actor, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews in the foyer of Thames Television's Euston Road Studios, having been led to believe he was there to discuss a future arts programme.
Anthony, who was born near Southport, trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art but left after two terms to find work as a stooge to comics in the music hall. He later toured overseas with the Old Vic Theatre, playing Shakespeare before enlisting with the Royal Artillery during the Second World War.
After the war, he spent several years directing with the Royal Shakespeare Company before achieving international fame as a successful screen actor with roles in films such as Ice Cold in Alex, The Guns of Navarone and Lawrence of Arabia.
