Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Peter SCUDAMORE (1958-)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE – Peter Scudamore, National Hunt jockey, was surprised by Michael Aspel in the weighing-in room at Newbury Racecourse after his last race of the day.
Peter, the son of a Grand National-winning jockey turned trainer, was educated at Belmont Abbey School. At 18, he worked for trainer Willie Stephenson at his stables at Royston, Hertfordshire, before riding his first winner in August 1978.
He shared the Champion Jockey title in the 1981-82 National Hunt season and won the title outright for four consecutive seasons from 1985-86. In the 1988-89 season, he hit a run of successes that broke every record in the book with a total of 221 winners.
"That's very good of you – thank you very much indeed!"

CHAMPION jockey Peter Scudamore was upstaged at Newbury Races when Michael Aspel announced This Is Your Life. The record-breaking jockey had just dismounted after the last race of the day when Aspel appeared and produced the famous red book. The show is due to be screened in a couple of weeks time. Family and friends from the racing world managed to keep the secret for weeks as preparations went on behind the scenes. Scudamore is currently on target to break his own record for the number of winners in a season by a National Hunt jockey. He passed the 50 mark only a few weeks ago.
