Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Dickie HENDERSON (1922-1985)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Dickie Henderson, entertainer, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews while filming for his television series outside the Wembley studios of London Weekend Television.
Dickie, who was born in London, grew up in Hollywood, where he made his screen debut, aged 10, in the 1933 film Cavalcade. When his family moved back to London, Dickie attended St Joseph's College while also touring in the music hall with his father. After serving with the Royal Army Service Corp during the Second World War, he appeared in films, revues and pantomimes and on the radio with band leader Henry Hall.
In 1953 he began a successful television career, which included regularly comparing the ITV programme Sunday Night at the London Palladium. Then, following dozens of appearances on American television and a three-month season in Las Vegas, he starred in his own ITV show, The Dickie Henderson Show from 1960, which became the longest-running sitcom at the time.
