Ian WOOSNAM MBE (1958-)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE – Ian Woosnam, golfer, was surprised by Michael Aspel while celebrating his friends' wedding anniversary at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park hotel in Knightsbridge, London.
Ian, who was born in Shropshire, first began playing golf at Llanymynech Golf Club on the Welsh-English border. After turning professional in 1976, aged 18, and spending his early touring years driving around in a camper van to save money, his career took off when he won the Swiss Open in 1982 and was selected to play in the Ryder Cup team the following year.
By 1987, he had established himself by winning eight tournaments worldwide and amassing £1.8 million in prize money. In 1991, now ranked number one in the world, he achieved his lifelong ambition of winning the Masters Tournament - the first person representing Wales to ever win a major golf championship.
