Saeed JAFFREY OBE (1929-2015)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE – Saeed Jaffrey, actor, was surprised by Michael Aspel at the London Palladium during the curtain call of the musical The King and I, in which he was playing The Kralahome.
Saeed's acting career began in his native India, where he formed his own English theatre company in Delhi. He studied drama in America and became the first Indian actor to tour and perform Shakespeare in the US and the first to appear in a major role on Broadway.
He moved to London in the mid-1960s and found work in radio, television and film, and on stage, becoming the first Indian actor in a leading role in the West End. During the 1980s and 1990s, he was considered to be Britain's highest-profile Asian actor, with leading roles in such films as My Beautiful Laundrette and the television series The Jewel in the Crown and Tandoori Nights.
