Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Joe JOHNSON (1952-)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Joe Johnson, snooker player, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews while performing with his band, Made in Japan, at Thames Television's Teddington Studios.
Joe, who was born Joseph Malik in Bradford, was a keen snooker player at school and played as an amateur while working in a series of jobs, including motor mechanic, textile work, and seven years with British Gas as a pipe layer.
He was three times Yorkshire Champion and established the highest break by an amateur player of 140 in 1978 before turning professional the year later. He won the 1986 World Snooker Championship after starting the tournament as a 150-1 outsider, having never previously passed the first round.
"Thanks for that - I'm gobsmacked. I always thought this was fixed!"
