Michael BATES (1920-1978)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Michael Bates, actor, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews.
Michael, who was born in India, where his father was in the Civil Service, was educated at Uppingham School and St Catharine's College, Cambridge. During the Second World War, he served as a major with the Brigade of Gurkhas in the Burma Campaign.
On stage, he appeared with the Stratford Festival in Ontario, Canada and in London's West End, notably in Joe Orton's Loot in 1966, while on radio, he played various roles in the BBC's long-running comedy series The Navy Lark. His film credits include Bedazzled, Battle of Britain and A Clockwork Orange. However, his appearances in the BBC sitcoms Last of the Summer Wine and It Ain't Half Hot Mum made him a household name.
