Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Mollie SUGDEN (1922-2009)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Mollie Sugden, actress, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews at Thames Television's Euston Road Studios, having been led to believe she was there to take part in a children's programme.
Mollie, who was born in Keighley, worked in a local munitions factory during the Second World War before studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She served a long apprenticeship in repertory theatre before moving into television.
She had early success with the BBC television sitcom Hugh and I, which ran for five series from 1962, before appearing intermittently in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street from 1965. However, her appearances in two other BBC sitcoms, The Liver Birds and Are You Being Served? in the early 1970s, made her a household name.
