David VINE (1935-2009)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - David Vine, television sports presenter, was surprised by Michael Aspel while presenting the Masters Snooker Tournament for television at the Wembley Conference Centre.
David, who was born in Newton Abbott and raised in Barnstable, began his career as a reporter with the North Devon Journal Herald and later joined the Western Morning News after completing his National Service with the Intelligence Corps. In 1961, he joined Westward Television as the producer of their sports department but was soon appearing in front of the camera.
He joined the BBC in 1966 as presenter of Sports Scene and later was chairman of the quiz show Quizball which became A Question of Sport. He presented a wide range of programmes for the BBC, including showjumping, Miss World, Superstars and Ski Sunday, and from 1978 he became the channel's anchorman for the World Snooker Championships.
