Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Dave Lee TRAVIS (1945-)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Dave Lee Travis, radio and television presenter and disc jockey, was surprised by Michael Aspel while presenting his radio show on GWR Classic Gold, having been led to believe he was being filmed for a promotional film.
Dave first began working as a DJ in the nightclubs of Manchester, which led to a UK tour of clubs, ballrooms and theatres presenting his own DJ shows. He later toured the US with the pop group Herman's Hermits as their tour manager and warm-up DJ before returning to the UK to continue his tours around the north of England. In the mid-1960s, he joined the pirate radio station, Radio Caroline.
He got his big break at the end of 1967 as host of the fledgling Radio 1's Pop North programme from Manchester but soon moved to London's Broadcasting House as a Radio 1 regular, becoming the presenter of the Breakfast Show in May 1978. He was also a regular host of BBC television's Top of the Pops and regularly broadcast on the BBC World Service. In 1993, he resigned from the BBC live on air and moved to Independent Radio.
"Michael, how are you? You've got to be kidding me? I dread to think what's inside those pages really!"
