Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Bill GILES OBE (1939-)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Bill Giles, meteorologist and television presenter, was surprised by Michael Aspel while filming a report for the BBC television programme The Weather Show at the Thames Barrier in Woolwich, London.
Bill, who was born in Dittisham, near Dartmouth, first became interested in meteorology whilst at school in Crediton and joined the Plymouth Meteorological Office at age 17. Having been chosen to observe the immediate meteorological effects of the H-bomb tests on Christmas Island, he was later based in Germany as an observer with the RAF before working as a lecturer at the Met Office's training college.
His broadcasting career began in 1972 when he joined the London Weather Centre to become part of the team forecasting for BBC Radio. He moved into television forecasting in 1975, and except for three years in public relations between 1980 and 1983, he remained with the team for 20 years, taking charge of BBC Television's forecasting team in May 1983.
