Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Brian MURPHY (1932-)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Brian Murphy, actor, was surprised by Michael Aspel during a photocall for the play The Government Inspector in the foyer of the Almeida Theatre in London.
Brian, who was born in Ventnor, Isle of Wight, began acting with the Dramatic Society of the Borough Polytechnic Institute in London after completing his national service with the RAF. An audition with Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop led to an appearance in the 1963 production of Oh What A Lovely War, which transferred to Broadway in New York.
On television, he appeared in several shows during the 1960s and early 1970s before being cast in 1973 in the role that made him a household name - as landlord George Roper in the ITV sitcom Man About the House and its spin-off George and Mildred. In 1985, he won a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor for his role as the comedy actor Arthur Lucan in the television drama On Your Way, Riley.
