Professor, The Lord WINSTON (1940-)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Robert Winston, doctor, scientist and television presenter, was surprised by Michael Aspel while filming for his new television series, The Human Body, at the London Aquarium.
Robert, who was born in Southgate, London, studied at St Paul's School and the London Hospital Medical College, graduating in 1964 with a degree in medicine and surgery. He became an expert in human fertility and joined Hammersmith Hospital as a registrar in 1970, where he founded the hospital's IVF unit.
As head of the fertility unit at Hammersmith for nearly 20 years, he helped more than 1,000 women become mothers and was dubbed 'the man who makes babies'. In addition, his pioneering medical research has helped the fight against hereditary diseases. As a broadcaster, he presented the BBC documentary series Making Babies and five series of Your Life in Their Hands. He was created a life peer in 1995.
