Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Clive HORNBY (1944-2008)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Clive Hornby, actor, was surprised by Michael Aspel while filming a scene for the ITV soap opera Emmerdale on location at Wharfedale Hospital in Otley, West Yorkshire.
Clive, who was born in Liverpool, attended Liverpool Collegiate School before training as an accountant. As a keen drummer, he joined the 1960s Merseybeat band The Dennisons, who played at the city's famous Cavern Club and released several singles before splitting up in 1966. Clive then worked part-time in the family's taxi driving business while training in drama at Ackerley Studios.
Having worked as an assistant stage manager with Liverpool Playhouse, he trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art before spending six years touring in repertory theatre in Greenwich, Northampton, Dundee and Salisbury. His big break in television came in February 1980 when he was cast in Emmerdale as Jack Sugden - a role that made him a household name.
