Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Robin BAILEY (1919-1999)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Robin Bailey, actor, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews - along with colleagues from his current play - at the Savoy Hotel in London, having been led to believe he was there for a photo shoot in connection with his forthcoming television series.
Robin, who was born in Nottinghamshire and first performed with his local Amateur Drama Club while working for the postal service, made his first professional appearance in 1938 at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham. After serving with the British Army during the Second World War, he joined a repertory company in Birmingham.
In 1959, he played Professor Higgins in a successful run of a production of the musical My Fair Lady on a tour of Australia. He later became well known to television viewers as the contentious Uncle Mort in the BBC comedy series I Didn't Know You Cared, which ran for four years from 1975.
