Geoffrey HUGHES (1944-2012)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE – Geoffrey Hughes, actor, was surprised by Michael Aspel - with the help of actor Derek Fowlds - while filming a scene on the set of the ITV police drama series Heartbeat in Yorkshire.
Geoffrey, who was born in Wallasey, Cheshire, first began acting with Merseyside Unity Theatre while working at a Liverpool department store. Having turned professional, he joined the repertory company at the Victoria Theatre, Stoke-on-Trent. He went on to make his West End debut in the musical Maggie May in 1964.
He first appeared in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street in 1967. He later returned to the soap in 1974 in the regular part of lovable rogue Eddie Yeats, a role which made him a household name and which he played until 1983. Geoffrey appeared in the BBC television sitcoms Keeping Up Appearances between 1990 and 1995 and The Royle Family from 1998.
