Dame Dorothy TUTIN DBE (1930-2001)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE – Dorothy Tutin, actress, was surprised by Michael Aspel at the curtain call of The Gift of Christmas at the Epsom Playhouse.
Dorothy, who was born in London and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, began her stage career in 1949. She worked with the Bristol Old Vic Company, the Old Vic company in London and the Royal Shakespeare Company. She won the Evening Standard Award for Best Actress twice, first in 1960 for Twelfth Night and again in 1975 for A Month in the Country, for which she also won an Olivier award.
She made her Broadway debut in 1963 in The Hollow Crown and would receive a Tony award nomination in 1968 for her role in Portrait of a Queen. She won her second Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Revival for The Double Dealer in 1978. Her films included The Importance of Being Earnest, The Beggar's Opera and The Shooting Party.
